Thankyou - Prompt Action for Access Kerbs

Janet Baker

Lucas and Nile with their grandmother Janet Baker outside Wesley Street Park.A few months ago when taking my grandchildren, one of whom is in a wheelchair, to the playground on Wesley St. I had some difficulty in getting into it because there were no dropped pavements in the part of the road around the playground.  As I walked back I noticed that most of the dropped pavements were for the benefit of motorists taking their cars over the pavement.  The area presented considerable difficulties for wheelchair users, prams and people with general mobility problems.

As a member of Agbrigg and Belle Vue Community Association I decided to give the Council a ring and point out, very politely (of course), the problem.  A few weeks later I was telephoned by a lady from the Highways Dept. telling me she had been herself to inspect the area and agreed that there was a need. “It may not be possible to do them all at once,” she said “but I am commissioning the work over the next few months.”

A few weeks ago Council vehicles and equipment appeared in our area and at least 25 dropped pavements have been installed.  All the junctions and the playground are now adequately accessible.  So thank you WMDC for your prompt action, and for so readily putting right a problem and  helping us to make our area a good place to live.
