Should the zebra crossing be moved?

Some residents feel that the zebra crossing on Agbrigg Road by the old Post Office would be better placed nearer the shops and park.

In consideration of this, the Neighbourhood Management Board propose that the zebra crossing be moved from the old position between Grosvenor Street and Oakenshaw Street to a new position on the speed bump between Montague Street and Back Bowman Street, near to St. Catherine Street. This is also the where the local walking bus for Sandal Magna school cross each morning.

Mockup of zebra crossing at the end of Montague StreetAccording to both recent traffic department surveys on Agbrigg Road, there is not enough traffic to justify moving the zebra crossing due to the traffic alone. Because of this, Neighbourhood Management Board have prepared a formal request (requiring supporting residents signatures) which reads:

We the undersigned request and require Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, to install a zebra crossing on Agbrigg Road on the traffic calming hump situated between Montague Street and Bowman Street.

Residents supporting this move should add their name to the request form at the Community Centre or with a member of the Neighbourhood Management Board.

Those opposed to this move, or merely wishing to record comments should also record their comments or objections at the Community Centre or with a member of the Neighbourhood Management Board.

If there is sufficient overall support, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council will then be free to carry out the will of the residents independent of surveyed traffic rates, and move the zebra crossing accordingly.

This is an important consultation, and all residents with an opinion for or against the moving of the zebra crossing have the opportunity to record their view.

The editor gratefully notes the amount of work done already by WMDC departments in the area, (often facilitated by the NMT), and hopes that this consultation will also allow this important move.
