After the Floods – Report

Eileen Worton

The recent meeting “After the floods – what next?” hosted by the Agbrigg & Belle Vue Community Association attracted over 100 people. The main speaker was Mr. Peter Davis-Group Engineer, W.M.D.C.

Mr. Davis gave an informative insight into the Government regulations and obstacles that have to be overcome in order to proceed with the Flood Defence works that are required in our area. He assured residents that he is continuing to work toward improving our local flood defences and he is hopeful of some works being started in this financial year. The audience had many questions and understandably remain anxious about future flooding.

Plans were displayed which demonstrated predicted flood levels and the position of the earth banking, holding lakes and an additional run off area to minimise the level of flooding that might affect properties in the future. These works would also incorporate a pump that could pump excess water away from the houses onto the open land.

No representative from the Environment Agency was present, they felt they were unable to add anything more to the information that Mr. Davis was passing on but once they had more solid plans they would be pleased to attend a meeting.

The Community Association thanks Mr. Davis and Mr. Poole for attending, and also Cllr’s Hopkins and Graham for their support.

In order for the Association to represent the views of residents and for us to have a stronger voice we invite new members. A gentleman left his name after the meeting but no contact details, if he or other interested residents would contact Eileen Worton on 01924 375278 she will inform him or other interested residents of future meetings.

The next meeting of Agbrigg & Belle Vue Community Association is Tuesday  10th June 2008 at 5pm at the eco-building on Woodcock Street Allotments accessed from the gate on Sugar Lane. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
