£50 penalty for littering

If you drop litter in the Wakefield district, be prepared to pay the price - that's the warning coming from Wakefield Council.

From 5th July, Neighbourhood Patrollers and enforcement officers will issue a £50 on-the-spot fine to anyone they see dropping litter.Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: "We are determined to provide a cleaner, safer environment for our citizens to live in... The dropping of any kind of litter is an environmental crime and our message is clear - 'bin it or pay'.The fixed penalty can be imposed for littering anywhere in the Wakefield district, with particular attention in the city and town centres.Nick Holowka, Wakefield City Centre Manager said: "There are plenty of litter bins in the city centre for people to use - there is no excuse for dropping rubbish.
