Having seen a massive decline in cleanliness in the streets as I have lived and grown up in his area, I decided that by working together with the Agbrigg and Belle Vue Community Association (ABVCA) and the WMDC we could help to clean up the area together. With this in mind, a meeting was arranged at the end of June with local council representatives and community workers. In the meeting it was decided to clean St Catherine Street, Trinity Street and Oakenshaw Street as a pilot project. Young people from Kettlethorpe School helped distribute leaflets in these streets informing residents of the cleanup and when to remove their vehicles. The cleanup was very successful after a very wet day, with many local residents expressing astonishment at the change. “We were told that it would be a nightmare removing vehicles from the road, but this pilot proves that having local community involvement can make the job so much easier” was a comment by council staff.
This has had a major impact on the community, residents have approached us regarding the cleanup of other streets. We now have plans in place for cleaning up a further three streets including clearing drains. There are also plans to place more litter bins around the area.
We would like to thank Jean Richardson from ABVCA, Darren and Ian from WMDC, Cllr Hopkins, Nasser, and Amjad and Usman on work experience from Kettlethorpe School, for their help.
We would like to work together with the residents and clean up the whole area, if anybody is interested in helping please contact Nadeem Ahmed or Shahid Ali at WAWA on 01924 215563 or pop into the community centre, or contact Ayub, Amanda or Jean at the ABVCA regarding the Agbrigg & Belle Vue
